Thirty years of research on biodiversity and ecosystem functioning: what have we learned and what remains to be learned?
MichelLoreau is currently emeritus researcherat the Theoretical and ExperimentalEcology Station of the National Centre for Scientific Research in Moulis(France) and adjunct professor at Peking University (China). He is a fellowof the Royal Society of Canada, a member of the Academia Europaea, an honorarymember of the British Ecological Society, and the recipient of numerousscientific awards. Throughout his career, he has strived to establishthe theoretical foundations for a new ecological synthesis that integrates thedivergent perspectives of community ecology, evolutionary ecology, andecosystem ecology. Over the past thirty years, his research has focusedprimarily on the consequences of biodiversity loss for ecosystem functioning, ecosystem stability, and human societies. This new field of research hasexperienced spectacular growth, to which he has contributed significantly, notonly through his scientific work, but also through his responsibilities innumerous national and international initiatives. Biodiversity and Ecosystem Functioning(BEF) has been one of the most successful areas of research in recent decadesbecause of its ability to link important basic scientific questions to societalconcerns, establish strong links between experimental and theoretical work, andbuild scientific consensus despite and beyond differences of opinion. Afterinitial controversy, it has provided irrefutablescientific evidence that biodiversity loss affects ecosystem functioning andservices, with potentially major long-term consequences for humansocieties. But BEFresearch has also changed the way we do science in ecology. In particular, ithas opened up entirely new perspectives on the long-standing diversity–stabilitydebate, largely resolving the debate and changing our understanding of the veryconcept of stability. Recent advances and future challenges in BEF researchinclude (1) buildingnew partitioning frameworks and new experiments to unravel the underlyingmechanisms, (2) connecting experimental and observational approaches, and (3) scaling-upBEF research to larger spatial and temporal scales and more complexmultitrophic ecosystems to inform policy and management.
